Bilindiği gibi IARU tarafından belirlenmiş ve kullanılmakta olan HF amatör band planında 10 (on) adet amatör frekans bandı (Aslında biri LF, diğeri ise MF bandındadır.) vardır. Bu bandların hepsi için birer (monoband) dipol veya loop anten yapacak olsak çatı veya terasın yetmesi mümkün değildir. Bazı radyo amatörlerin imkanı sadece bir ya da iki HF anten kurmaya müsaittir. Ne yazık ki bazılarının ise çatıya bir dikey anten kurma imkanı bile yoktur.
Bu nedenle monoband antenlerin yanında, bir çok frekans bandında çalışan, çeşitli malzemelerden imal edilmiş, onlarca, hâttâ yüzlerce kısa dalga anteni icad edilmiştir ve kullanılmaktadır. Ancak bu antenler balun dışında, bobin, trap veya sonlandırıcı gibi pasif elektronik devreler gerektirmektedir.
Bunlardan bir çeşidi Broadband Folded Dipole Antenna veya Wide-Band Folded Dipole Antenna adı altında iletişim hattın sonunda antene 1:4 - 1:10 balun ile geçiş sağlanan ve direnç devresi ile sonlandırılmış geniş band katlanmış dipol antenlerdir.
Diğer bir çeşidi ise multi band adı altında, iletişim hattın sonunda antene 1:1 balun ile geçiş sağlanan, bobin ya da bobinler, trap ya da traplar kullanılarak yapılmış çok bandlı dipol (çok bandda çalışan dipol) antenlerdir
Ayrıca Türkiye’de kedi bıyığı olarak adlandırılan, bir 1:1 baluna, çeşitli bandlarda çalışan tel dipol antenlerin bağlanması sonucu da çok bandlarla çalışan anten tiplerinden biri olarak kullanılmaktadır.
Çok frekans bandında çalışmasına rağmen sadece balun gerektirip, bobin, trap veya başka pasif elektronik devreler gerektirmeyen tek anten Windom Anten’dir.
"Windom Anten" W8GZ çağrı işaretli, Loren G. Windom ismindeki amatör telsizci tarafından 1929 yılında icad edilmiştir. İlk Windom Anten’in tasarımı, A.B.D.nde yayımlanan QST dergisinin, Eylül 1929 sayısı, 19-22’nci sayfalarında tanımlanarak amatör telsizcilerin bilgisine sunulmuştur. İsmini, tasarımcısı ve mucidinden almıştır.
Genel prensip olarak Windom Anten, 50ohm koaksiyel dengesiz bir iletişim hattı ile pasif bir elektronik eleman olan balun üzerinden simetrik olmayan dipol anten kanatları ile çalışır.
Windom Anten, 1937 yılında çok band’da çalışan antenler arasında yerini almıştır. Yapım, montaj, kullanım kolaylığı ve verimli özellikleri ile ilgi görmüştür, popüler olmuştur. Dünyada binlerce amatör telsizci profesyonel veya amatör yapım Windom Anten kullanmaktadır.
Loren G. Windom tarafından orijinal olarak icad edildiği gibi, A.B.D.nde imal edilen profesyonel ve amatör windom antenler, 1:4 balun ile çalıştırılmakta ve kullanılmaktadır. Avrupa kıtasında imal edilen profesyonel windom antenler ise genelde 1:6 balun ile çalıştırılmakta ve kullanılmaktadır.
Windom anten hesaplandığı ilk frekansın logaritmik katlarında çalışır. 3,585 MHz esas alınarak yapılmış bir windom anten, çevresinden etkilenmediği bir ortamda, HF amatör band ortalamaları olan, 80, 40, 20 ve 10 m amatör bandlarda tuner gerektirmeksizin kullanılabilir. Hesap ve imalat yaparken üst frekansların da dikkate alınması gereklidir.
Windom anten hesabında, çalıştırılacak en düşük frekans ya da frekans bandı ortalamasına denk gelen dipol anten boyu esas alınır. Esas alınan bu dipol antenin toplam uzunluğunun üçte biri balun’un – (eksi) terminaline, üçte iki uzunluğu balun’un + (artı) terminaline bağlanarak anten oluşturur
Anten yapımında çok telli veya tek damarlı en az bir’lik kaliteli bakır alaşımlı tel (kablo) ihtiyacımızı karşılar. Ancak, 1,5 veya 2’lik tel daha fazla güç göndermede yardımcı olur, 2,5’luk veya daha kalın tel antenin ağırlaşmasına sebep olur. Profesyonel yapım alüminyum çelik alaşımlı ve izoleli anten kablosu kullanılması daha verimli ve dayanıklı olacaktır.

Fiziki dipol antenler, hesap edildikleri uzunlukların %5 eksinine kadar SWR tutacaklarından, bu şekilde yapılan windom anten çalıştırıldığında genelde 3.585 MHz.den daha düşük frekansta SWR tutacaktır. Teferruatlı hesaplamalardan ziyade, belirli uzunlukta anteni karşılıklı olarak ancak, uzun tarafı, kısa tarafının iki katında kısaltarak rezonansa getirilmesi gerekecektir.
Anten, özellikle göndermede çevrede etkileşim yapacak metal cisim, araç vb. ile, elektromanyetik alan oluşturan cihaz, makine vb. olmadığı bir ortamda kısaltılarak rezonansa getirilmelidir. SWR kontrolünü sadece 80m.de (3.585MHz) değil, 40m (7.100MHz), 20m (14.175MHz) ve 10m (28.850MHz) bandlarında da denenerek yapılmasında fayda vardır.
Başta iki üç defa, kısa tarafı 5cm, uzun tarafı 10 cm gibi uzunlukta kesilebilir. SWR istenilen frekansa yaklaşmağa başlayınca, kesilecek uzunluklar kısa tarafı 2cm, uzun tarafı 4cm gibi ölçülere düşürülür.
Windom antenler, yapılışında esas alındığı frekansın logaritmik olarak katlarında düşük SWR’de çalışsa da, çalıştığı üst frekanslar kendi dalga boylarına yakın imal edilmiş windom antenlerde daha verimlidir. Örneğin, 80m amatör bandı esas alınarak yapılmış bir windom antene göre, 20m amatör bandı esas alınarak yapılmış bir windom anteni 10m bandında daha verimli çalışır.
